CS Design: memorial: King of Glory Lutheran Church
King of Glory Lutheran Church in Arvada, CO requested a design for a columbarium and memorial garden that would accomodate at least 200 niches and a memorial wall for long time members who wished to be interred on church grounds. The hope was that the columbarium and memorial walls could be located on the north side of building adjacent to the sanctuary, however this caused concern as this space already houses a small playground and is currently used as a fellowship space after Sunday services.
With this background information, as well as input from the church committee, CS Design provided a series of four concepts with the goal of illustrating that the one space could indeed provide enough room for all of the desired uses. Each of the concepts is unique in character and approaches the program needs differently, but in a thoughtful manner.
The final concept creates a courtyard space for fellowship after church services with plenty of room for outdoor seating and conversation areas under the beautiful, mature shade trees that extends up to the playground to provide a place for parents to watch over children. To the right of the playground, the columbarium and memorial walls are laid out on a radius to give a sense enclosure and separation from the other uses. In addition to the columbarium walls, this space includes seat walls, a water feature and large planting areas to soften the hard edges, provide year-round beauty and interest and help buffer the space from it's surroundings.
